Fair Trade Week in Germany

September 10th, 2008 by Frans Prins Posted in Blog, Fair Trade

From next week, it’s Faire Woche (Fair Trade Weeks) in Germany. All over the country there are local events to promote fair traded products, and the events go from local charity groups that do an action, to lectures and festivals.

In Hamburg there will be a podium discussion on Responsibility in Fashion with Alexandra Perschau (PAN Germany), Dr. Davo Vodouhe (OBEPAB, Benin), Claudia Brück (Transfair Deutschland), Maik Pflaum (Christliche Initiative Romero), Ulrich van Gemmeren (MADE-BY Deutschland). The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Tanja Busse, author of the book „Die Einkaufsrevolution“ (“The shopping revolution”), a book that in Germany boosted attention for the topic of ethical consume. Date: 24.09 at 19.30.

Christoph Harrach from the German green lifestyle blog Karmakonsum organizes a Fair Trade Blog Carnival and will do his blogging action “Fair trade man”, trying to live two weeks on only fair trade products.

In The Netherlands (which is by the way not part of Germany) there will be a party this weekend promoting Fair Trade in fashion at the popular Amsterdam club Paradiso. Under the name Foute Nacht (“Bad Night”) the party celebrates the end of bad (not fairly traded) cotton. When you donate at least one piece of “bad” clothing, you get a free entrance. Witht he collected pile of clothes, the event wants to point at the enormous amount of clothes that is still produced under bad circumstances. As I’m in The Netherlands anyway, I might be there if I’m in the mood ;)

uff, don’t let any Dutch read your lines… ;) I mean the part where you explain that it is by the way not part of Germany. Think they won’t be happy about that!!

The quality it has those products can be compared with the cheap one’s. I always buy the tasty chocolate powder, and it delights my hot chocolate. Pure bio nature chocolate

@Werbegeschenke: The fair trade is every year (end of Feb/beginning March), but most time not at Germany.

The fairtrade is important. The same as Made in Germany. An important brand. Factories can increase their business.

I’m always trying to buy bio products or trade fair products than others. They taste different form big great production.

Prefer to eat less and delight more

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
