How Septic Tank Pumping Works

The septic service works to sort the household waste. Solids settle down to the bottom of the tank and floatable waste, such as oils, fats, and greases, rises to the top. If these materials are not removed from the septic tank regularly, they can flow out into the absorption field and clog the drain field and sewage pipes. Regular septic tank pumping reduces the risk of this happening and extends the life of the septic system.

Before the septic tank pumping process begins, our septic technician will inspect the tank to determine its level of sludge and scum buildup. They will also look at the septic tank access port, the location of the house’s plumbing fixtures, and any other relevant information that may help with the cleaning and pumping process.

After they finish their inspection, the septic tank service truck will be positioned over the tank to start the pumping process. A hose will be inserted into the tank’s access point and a vacuum is created, sucking out the sludge and scum like a giant vacuum cleaner. The waste is then taken away for processing and disposal, as required by local regulations.

Depending on how much the septic tank holds, it may need to be pumped more or less frequently. It is best to have it pumped when the sludge and scum levels are between one-half and three-quarters full. This way, the septic tank will be close to empty when it is pumped, which will minimize costs and prevent a messy job.
